On Monday 14 April 2025 W. Bro. Ken Cook was honoured for lifelong service to our Lodge when he was presented with a 50‑Year Jewel and Certificate by the Provincial Assistant Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Richard Totton.

Ken was initiated into Craigantlet Lodge of Friendship No. 486 in February 1975, and served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1988, and then as Treasurer for nine consecutive years. Colleagues recall his meticulous handling of the Lodge’s accounts—often reviewed under the watchful eye of “Laurabell,” a notably chatty parrot who presided over many audit sessions.

Before his Masonic career, Ken followed his father into the Merchant Navy. He joined Cory Ship Towage in 1971 and eventually took charge of the tugboats that guide vessels through Belfast Lough. His calm leadership at sea became a hallmark of his approach in the Lodge: dependable, unflappable, and ever ready to lend a hand.

Away from the Lodge room, Ken’s story is one of community and family. He met his wife Pauline on the bus, whilst travelling home from Queen’s University, and the couple’s early dates at Caproni’s café in Bangor are still fondly remembered. Married in the early 1970s, they have raised three children, now enjoy the company of seven grandchildren and three great‑grandchildren, and have recently added Benny, a Yorkshire Terrier, to their household.

A keen sportsman in his youth, Ken played rugby and remains an active member of Knock Golf Club alongside Pauline.

“The 50-year jewel represents far more than the passage of time—it’s a tribute to a life of unwavering fellowship, service, and dedication to the Craft. W. Bro. Cook’s commitment over five decades stands as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the enduring bonds and values that lie at the heart of Freemasonry,” said the Provincial Assistant Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Richard Totton.

After the formal meeting, the Brethren gathered for a light supper, where Ken’s wife Pauline joined the celebrations and helped him cut a specially made cake to mark the occasion. Reflecting on his long Masonic journey, Ken said, “Freemasonry has given me friendship, purpose, and a sense of belonging. I never imagined 50 years would pass so quickly—but I’ve enjoyed every moment.”
